6 of the Strangest Dental Emergencies Ever Recorded

Dental emergencies typically happen as a result of injuries, losses, and severe pain. Your dentist has dealt with these types of common tooth-related problems for their entire career. They may have also treated something unusual once or twice.

The six dental emergencies described below are some of the most bizarre, grotesque, or cringe-worthy that you’ll find anywhere. Continue reading to gaze upon the fascinating horror of extreme dental mishaps.

1. You Know the Drill

A patient decided that the best way to take care of his tooth decay was to drill it himself. It may have seemed like a good idea at the time. After all, if you have a drill lying around and you’ve been to the dentist before, that’s the same thing as a professional operation, right?

He ended up getting the bit stuck in his tooth and the dentist had to remove it for him.

2. Wasn’t Ant-icipating That

A visit with a patient began normally. He sat down and the dentist got him comfortable and fitted him with a bib. As the dentist did so, he noticed an ant crawling on his hand. He got rid of it and tried to find where it had come from.

The patient’s beard was hiding a swarm of tiny ants that began crawling down the sides of the chair, halting the treatment until they could be removed.

3. Draining the Pain

A dentist sat down with a patient who was complaining that his gums were swollen on one side—nearly the entire length of his jaw. After an examination, the dentist concluded that it was an infection that needed to be treated immediately.

As he began to make an incision, the abscess exploded, filling the patient’s mouth with pus.

4. Talk About Roots

A small boy came into the office for his first-ever dental appointment. He was excited, but he told the dentist that he had some pain in his tooth. The dentist examined the x-rays and concluded that the boy needed a root canal.

As the dentist began the treatment, he noticed some kind of seed lodged in the boy’s gums with a small leafy plant sticking out of it. The boy had eaten a tomato, and the seed started to grow in his gums.

5. A Bridge Too Far

A patient presented to the dentist with several missing teeth. They explained that they noticed some buildup on the surface of their teeth, so they decided to brush it away when their pearly whites began to fall out.

The dentist concluded that because of years of neglect, a calculus bridge had formed across the patient’s teeth, nearly fusing them together. The only thing holding them in was the bridge the patient had brushed away.

6. Superglue Dentistry

When a woman’s crown had fallen out, she decided that rather than go to the dentist, she would try to fix the problem herself. All it needed was a strong enough adhesive to put it back into place. She proceeded to put superglue into the crown, but when she put it back in, it wouldn’t stick, and all the glue spread over her mouth and throat.

Her dentist begged her to seek a professional the next time.

Dentists are here to help, regardless of your situation. However, if you want to avoid having an extreme dental emergency of your own, make sure you follow your dentist’s advice.
