It’s not often that a medical service can treat a variety of issues, however BOTOX is an X-factor – almost like a Swiss army knife. Known for erasing wrinkles, it can also provide relief for migraines, excessive sweating, and other conditions. More recently, doctors and dentists alike are using BOTOX to improve the appearance of facial scars. But how is this done? And is this treatment right for you? Read on to learn the answers as well as some other important information about BOTOX!

First, What is BOTOX?

BOTOX is short for Botulinum toxin, which is a neurotoxic protein that prevents the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine from axon endings, resulting in flaccid paralysis. In other words, it’s a special medicine that is injected to freeze muscle movements. This service is most popularly used for treating wrinkles in the face, relaxing muscles to prevent skin from folding over on itself to cause lines.

Using BOTOX to Treat Facial Scars

In a study conducted on 16 patients who were getting plastic surgery to improve facial appearance, researchers found that on average, BOTOX reduces the bumpiness and width of scars. On a scale of one to 10 that rates appearance (1 being the worst, 10 being the best), BOTOX treatment scored 5.76, which is a point higher than when it wasn’t used. This evidence shows that BOTOX is a useful aid to plastic surgery and other treatments that involve cuts or incisions.

A Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Darren Smith, says that movement makes scars worse. However, BOTOX can freeze muscle motion, allowing the incision to heal more completely. The one catch is that the study doesn’t include older scars – BOTOX was only injected immediately after surgery to prevent scarring down the road.

Is BOTOX Right for You?

If you’re wondering whether you’re a good candidate for BOTOX, the best way to know is to schedule an appointment with a highly trained cosmetic dentist. They will be able to discuss your needs and review your medical history before recommending the best option. Most patients who are considering any type of plastic or facial surgery should consider adding BOTOX to their treatment to reduce the appearance of scarring.

Don’t let potential scars get in the way of enjoying the treatment you need! Now that you know about the wonders of BOTOX, contact an expert to take advantage of the latest in modern medicine.
