Are you considering Invisalign? Giving yourself the gift of a straighter smile is exciting, but if you’ve had repairs and restorations to your teeth previously, you may be wondering about whether or not you can still enjoy clear braces. Thankfully, your dentist has included some information that will answer any concerns you may have while also providing you with some key factors to consider. Read on to learn more about getting Invisalign when you’ve already had dental work done in the past.

First, a Quick Review

In order to understand if Invisalign is right for you, it’s important to know how it works. Invisalign utilizes a series of clear plastic aligning trays to gradually shift your teeth into place. These aligners are worn 20 to 22 hours a day for around 2 weeks. After wearing your aligners for the instructed duration, you’ll switch them out for the next trays in the series. This process will usually take between 8 and 18 months, but your treatment time will depend on your commitment to your dentist’s instructions.

Can You Get Invisalign with Previous Dental Work?

The answer is yes, but it also depends. In many cases, dentists will ensure that patients don’t want to complete orthodontics before beginning extensive restorations. That said, you can still receive Invisalign if you have had dental work in the past, however the affected areas of your smile will require special attention. Keep in mind that dental bridges typically connect multiple teeth, which is why they’re difficult to straighten. On the other hand, dental crowns top your natural teeth, so they can still move during treatment thanks to the tooth roots.

While crowns and bridges restore teeth, veneers are a cosmetic procedure with the ability to correct a variety of flaws in your appearance. These thin shells of dental porcelain or resin are designed to cover the entire front surfaces of the teeth, which is why they’re also known as instant orthodontics. While they can’t physically straighten your teeth, veneers can give slightly crooked teeth the appearance that they’re aligned. In some cases, your dentist may recommend getting Invisalign or braces followed by veneers to achieve the results you want.

What About Braces?

One of the benefits of Invisalign is that it’s not permanently fixed to the teeth, and it gently shifts the smile over time. While braces can give you the same results, the brackets and wires that are involved in treatment creates pressure on teeth that could damage or weaken restorations.

Getting the straight smile of your dreams is as easy as contacting a professional. After evaluating your smile, your dentist will be able to begin your safe, effective treatment.
