Tooth loss has been a common oral health problem since prehistoric times, and it can lead to a host of issues like trouble speaking, difficulty chewing, jawbone atrophy, and the loss of more teeth. Thankfully, dental implants can replace missing pearly whites with beautiful, functional, and long-lasting restorations that look, work, and feel just like the real thing. Here’s how dental implants work and how your dentist may be able to use them to replace your missing front teeth.

What Are Dental Implants?

A dental implant consists of a titanium post surgically inserted into the jawbone, a lifelike dental restoration that acts as the missing tooth or teeth, and a small abutment piece anchoring the two together. After being placed, an implant will gradually fuse with its surrounding jawbone tissue through the natural process of osseointegration, giving it the sturdy foundation it needs to restore maximum chewing power and last for decades if it receives proper care.

Can Dental Implants Replace Front Teeth?

While it’s more common for dental implants to replace the back teeth, they can be used to replace the teeth in the front of the mouth as well. The process begins with a consultation, during which your dentist will carefully evaluate your oral health and determine the best way to replace your lost pearly whites. If you are not ready to receive implants yet, they can schedule you for periodontal therapy to clear up gum disease or refer you to a specialist who can reinforce your jaws with bone grafts so you can replace your teeth later.

Once you are cleared for the treatment, you will be scheduled for implant surgery. This process begins with your dentist administering a local anesthetic to ensure your comfort before they make a small incision in the gum tissue and insert a titanium post into your jawbone. They will then close the gum tissue around the implant and schedule you for additional appointments so your abutment piece and restoration can be placed after your mouth has healed sufficiently.

While tooth loss can be a frustrating and unsightly issue, dental implants are the best way to replace missing pearly whites and restore the appearance and function of your smile. Consulting with your dentist can help you find out which type of dental restoration can be best for you.
