Dentures give you the ability to smile with beauty, speak with confidence, and eat a variety of foods. However, they unfortunately cannot last forever. If you have dentures, you’re probably wondering when you should replace your prosthetic. Most dentures will need to be replaced every 7 years but there are some telltale signs you should be aware of so you know when it’s time for a smile upgrade!

#1. Loose Dentures

Full dentures are designed to rest on your gums, staying in place with suction. You can also give yourself a more secure smile by using denture adhesive. That said, a loose or ill-fitting prosthesis is usually an indication that it needs to be adjusted or replaced completely. Notably, patients with implant dentures never have to worry about this issue because their dental implants are firmly secured in the jawbone, keeping the prosthetic smile stable and strong.

#2. Difficulty Speaking

Have you noticed that certain words are more difficult to pronounce than others? Has your speech slurred recently? This is usually due to slipping dentures. Whether it’s a social or professional setting, a prosthetic that slides around can be embarrassing and inconvenient. That’s why it’s in your best interest to contact your dentist for a replacement as soon as you notice an issue.

#3. Irritation or Discomfort

If your dentures are in proper shape, you should be able to eat, speak, and smile with comfort. However, if you start to notice pain or discomfort, typically when chewing, you may need a new denture. Keep in mind dentures that don’t fit properly will only become worse if they aren’t addressed. They can cause sores, lesions, or even worse damage to your mouth if you wait too long before getting them replaced or adjusted.

#4. Discoloration or Damage

Another easy way to tell if you need new dentures is by looking at its condition. Do you notice chips, cracks, stains, or other types of damage? If so, it’s time to reach out to your dentist for a replacement. The last thing you want is to put something in your mouth that may contain bacteria or edges that could hurt your oral tissue. When you get your new dentures, remember that foods or drinks rich in color like coffee, wine, marinara sauce, and more can cause discoloration and stains more rapidly. Plus, you should avoid extra hard items to keep your dentures safe.

You don’t have to live with an uncomfortable or loose set of teeth. Now that you know the warning signs to look out for, you can make sure your smile is always healthy and secure!
