If you have multiple dental issues you want to address, your dentist may recommend a full mouth reconstruction. This solution combines multiple restorative dental services into one comprehensive treatment plan to achieve the results you desire. In other words, a full mouth reconstruction will give you a beautiful, strong set of teeth even after years of damage, decay, and other problems. But how long does it take to recover from such an extensive procedure? Read on to learn about the recovery times of some of the most common restorative treatments associated with full mouth reconstructions.

Dental Fillings

For moderate decay and damage, tooth-colored fillings are the perfect treatment. Typically, your dentist can provide this treatment in a single visit, restoring your tooth back to its full health. Usually, patients can go back to their normal activities immediately after their appointment, although it may take the local anesthetic a few hours to completely wear off.

Crowns & Bridges

Custom-made restorations like crowns and bridges will take 2 appointments to complete – one for preparation and one for placement. During the first, a slight portion of your enamel is removed to accommodate the restoration. Your dentist will also take impressions, which are used to make your crown or bridge. In between the appointments, you’ll be given a temporary restoration to maintain your appearance and chewing ability. You may experience some slight sensitivity or soreness after these procedures, but this discomfort will go away after about 2 days.

Root Canal Therapy

If you have an infected tooth, root canal therapy is necessary because it can save your smile from extraction. Once infected and decayed tissue is removed, your dentist will clean and disinfect the area before filling the tooth with a biocompatible material called gutta percha. Then, the tooth is sealed with a filling or crown. It’s completely normal to experience sensitivity around the affected area for the first few days. There may also be swelling and inflammation. If these side effects get even worse after 3 or 4 days, call your dentist right away.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are the only replacement option that restores teeth from the roots up for the most lifelike, durable, and beautiful results. However, they require a surgery and a special healing process called osseointegration. Once placed in the jawbone, they need at least 3 to 4 months to become fully integrated. That said, immediate healing only takes a few days so your real recovery time is actually quite short.

Now that you know more about recovering from a full mouth reconstruction, there’s no need to worry! Contact your dentist to get your beautiful, strong smile back.
