Complex Root Canal Therapy from Whitinsville Family Dentistry

Everyone has heard someone tell a horror story about a root canal therapy procedure. Stories like, “I wasn’t all the way numb,” or, “It took seven appointments,” still resonate with patients today. The truth is, 20 years ago… 10 years ago… even 5 years ago… root canal therapy could be rather unpleasant. Today, however, root canal therapy is painless, fast, and efficient, usually being completed in a single visit. With recent advancements in local anesthesia, we can ensure that your entire tooth is completely numb prior to starting a root canal therapy procedure. And since our Whitinsville dental office is equipped with state-of-the-art motorized endodontic equipment, your root canal procedure can be performed quickly and efficiently with exceptional precision… getting you on your way faster.

What is root canal therapy?

Root canal therapy involves the placement of a special rubber filling that goes into the root of a tooth, usually replacing the entire pulp. A tooth has three layers: the white enamel on the outside, the yellow dentin in between, and the pink pulp on the inside, where the nerve is located. Once a cavity has moved through the enamel and dentin, the tooth may start to feel sensitive or painful to hot and cold. This is because the bacteria in the cavity are secreting toxins near the nerve and the nerve is inflamed. At this point, a simple filling may be all that is required to return the tooth to health. Once the bacteria themselves have touched the nerve, the infection is present and a root canal will be necessary to save the tooth. Once an infection has started, the only alternative to root canal therapy is extraction of the tooh.

How do I know if I need a root canal?

If you are noticing any tooth-related pain, whether it comes out of the blue or gets worse with biting, chewing, or hot and cold foods, please schedule an exam with Dr. Cnossen or Dr. Tubo to evaluate the situation and determine the underlying cause. As with almost everything in dentistry, the sooner these problems are addressed, the simpler and less expensive the solutions tend to be!
