Dentures can be a fantastic way to restore a smile after extensive tooth loss, but they aren\u2019t for everyone. They can make it difficult for some people to eat a wide variety of nutritious foods, and others have trouble with them when trying to communicate because they slip out of place while they speak. Luckily, dental implants can be a sturdier, more permanent tooth loss solution. Here\u2019s a brief guide to transitioning from dentures to dental implants<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

How Are Dental Implants Superior to Dentures?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Dentures can also lead to a loss of bone mass in the face. The jawbone normally gets exercise from supporting the teeth during the chewing process, but this exercise is lost after tooth loss. Without this stimulation, the jawbone will begin to atrophy and recede. Over time, this can cause the mouth to sink into the face, leaving the patient with a withered and elderly appearance. Dentures don\u2019t provide the jaw with enough stimulation to prevent this bone loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unlike dentures, dental implants are surgically placed in the jawbone, allowing them to fuse with it and create a sturdy foundation. Because they are rooted directly within the bone structure, dental implants behave exactly like real teeth, allowing them to stimulate the jawbone so it can stay healthy and strong. This can prevent or even reverse bone loss after tooth loss. Once the surgical areas have healed, the patient is free to chew vigorously and speak without fear of embarrassment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Will I Need to Be Ready for Dental Implants?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Dental implants need to be placed in healthy gums and jawbones to be successful. If you have gum disease, it will need to be resolved before your implants can be placed. Similarly, if your jawbones are too thin to support implants, you may be able to receive bone grafts to reinforce them. This process can take several months to complete, but it can make your mouth ready to receive implants. Diabetes can interfere with the healing process, so people with this condition will have to get it under control before getting dental implants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dentures can be fine tooth restorations, but they leave a lot to be desired for many people. Consulting with your dentist can determine if you are a good candidate for dental implants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
